Fire Safety Tips for the Holiday Season
The City of Corpus Christi
CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) - The Corpus Christi Fire Department (CCFD) wants you to have a safe holiday season. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly a third of Christmas tree fires in the home are caused by electrical problems.
The CCFD Fire Prevention Division says it is crucial to remember that Christmas decorations can be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.
βThe Christmas season is a time of joy and happiness. Please take precautions and safety steps to keep it that way,β said Fire Department Chief Investigator Randy Paige.
Christmas tree safety
Make sure to keep your Christmas tree alive watered every day. Once a Christmas tree dries, it can burn out quickly.
Keep trees 3 feet from heat sources.
Make sure the tree is secured in the bracket and does not tip over.
Any lights placed on the tree must be UL listed for indoor use.
Christmas decoration
Don't plug too many lights into one outlet or extension. Read the manufacturer's instructions for the number of appropriate connections.
Some lights are suitable for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
The danger of fire occurs when there is an overload in the circuit: power supply.
Before going to bed or leaving the house, blow out the lighted candles and turn off all the Christmas lights.
Heater Safety
Have all ovens, wood stoves, fireplaces, and HVAC systems repaired before using for the winter season.
Purchase a heater with a seal from a qualified testing laboratory (UL certified).
All space heaters must be kept 3 feet away from any combustible material.
