Drainage Solution Option for North Beach

CORPUS CHRISTI – Corpus Christi City Council approved a contract amendment of nearly $124,000 to Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) to develop the probable project cost for three drainage options for North Beach.
The three drainage solution options for North Beach include:
Navigable canal
Open channel with linear park system
Closed conduit system
On January 26, 2021, LAN briefed City Council on the results of their first study that determined the project scope and limits and whether the canal will function as a major drainage facility and be navigable. At the meeting, staff received policy direction from City Council to develop cost estimates for three drainage solution options for North Beach to include a navigable canal, open channel with linear park system, and closed conduit system. City Council has authorized that the preliminary design work by LAN begin in March 2021 and is expected to be complete by May 2021.
North Beach has been a tourist destination for over 100 years. Located on the far north end of Corpus Christi, North Beach provides access to beaches, boat launches, shopping, restaurants, and popular tourist attractions such as the Texas State Aquarium and USS Lexington. North Beach experiences frequent flooding during high tide events. The high tide flooding causes ponding in low-lying areas and impedes drainage from modest rainfall events.
“The council’s action today is an important next step in determining the economic feasibility of the proposed drainage solutions. Our City Council is committed to making real improvements on North Beach,” said Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo.
