Project Will Allow Doubling of Labonte Park

City of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – The Corpus Christi City Council awarded a $1.7 million contract for the Cunningham Water Treatment Plant Demolition Project to Coastal Bend Demolition, Inc with FY 2022 funding available from the Water Capital Fund.

The City has plans to convert additional green space and preserve selected structural features into the final design of a public park area.

Located on the Nueces River, the Cunningham Water Treatment Plant was the City’s first water treatment plant. The facility was built in 1915, completing upgrades in 1950. The property has been abandoned since the 1980s.

The demolition makes way to put this City property into use by the community by connecting it to the adjacent Labonte Park. The doubling of acreage at Labonte from 40 to 80 acres will allow for more park features and amenities in a regional park is the first City asset seen driving into Corpus Christi from I-37 South.
