Deadline Approaches for NEC All Expenses Paid Trip

Nueces Electric Cooperative

TEXAS - Nueces Electric Cooperative (NEC) is offering high school juniors, who are dependents of members, the opportunity of going on the trip of a lifetime to Washington D.C. this summer. The 2024 Government-In-Action Youth Leadership Tour is an all-expense paid experience for high school juniors who are dependents of NEC members to learn about different aspects of the government, meet their members of Congress and visit historical sites.

The Government-In-Action Youth Tour has been a Texas co-op tradition since 1965, when the state’s electric cooperatives banded together to send 58 deserving high school students on this unforgettable trip. Educating and mentoring young people fits in with co-ops’ mission to empower and enrich the communities they serve. Since the program’s inception, more than 4,400 Texans have taken part in the program.

NEC will select two applicants to be delegates and represent us during this Youth Tour. Students from cooperatives across Texas will meet in Austin, Tx. to kick off their trip. After spending a day touring our state capital, they will travel to Washington D.C. to learn about our nation's history while visiting national and historical monuments and sites.

“The tour is usually a life-changing event in the lives of the young people who earn the trip. We predict this year’s delegates will join the growing number of Texas youth who will be touched by this incredible experience at our Nation's Capital,” says CEO Varzavand “Avan” Irani.

The travel package, valued at more than $3,600, includes air transportation to and from Washington D.C., hotel stay, meals, admission fees, and $250 for extra expenses. This year’s trip will span from Sunday, June 16th, 2024, to Tuesday, June 23rd, 2024. Each winner will also receive a $1,000 scholarship, should they attend an accredited Texas college or university.

The NEC Government-In-Action Youth Tour is open to all high school juniors whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) are NEC members. Applicants must apply online at nueceselectric.org/youthtour by Wednesday, January 31st, 2024, by 5pm.
