Council Approves Grant Application for CCFD

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The Corpus Christi City Council approved a resolution for the Corpus Christi Fire Department (CCFD) to apply for a grant provided by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant aims to assist fire departments in achieving 24-hour staffing, providing adequate protection from fire and related hazards. It supports the mission of fire departments to meet or exceed the operational standards set by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA).
The NFPA 1710 Standard sets minimum requirements that fire departments respond with a minimum of four personnel on each unit and arrive at emergency scenes within four minutes of receiving a call, setting a high bar for readiness and response. Currently, 8 out of the City’s 22 frontline fire companies have four-person staffing.
"Applying for a SAFER grant is a clear testament to our commitment to public safety and our Firefighters. This is how we move forward in creating a safer more resilient community for generations to come," said City Manager Peter Zanoni.
If awarded, the grant would provide funds for salaries and benefits for 78 additional firefighters over the next three years.
CCFD’s initiative to secure the SAFER grant exemplifies its commitment to public safety and the well-being of its residents. Grant selections will be made by September 30.
