Corpus Christi to Create a New Health Department
CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – City Council Council Members voted to withdraw from the Corpus Christi – Nueces County Public Health District.
The City will create a new Health Department as the departure from the Health District will enable the City to:
Provide improved and effective health services with more accountability and efficient use of taxpayer dollars
Provide residents better access to public health services
Enhance performance accountability
Significantly enhance the City’s health awareness, health initiatives, and health programs
Become a leader in providing public health services for the 8th largest city in Texas
Withdrawal from the Health District will allow the City to address an obsolete business model established nearly 40 years ago. The withdrawal also enables the City to implement best practice approaches to strengthen our public health services and ultimately improve health outcomes for our community.
Corpus Christi will now be aligned with the seven largest cities in Texas by population by having an established city Health Department. This new approach also is highly recommended by Chief W. Nim Kidd, the Texas lead for the state’s emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.
The withdrawal will be effective January 18, 2022. During the transition period, there will be no interruption in health services.
