CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – The Corpus Christi City Council authorized the purchase of playground units and play structures for 14 City parks included in the Bond 2020 program. The voters approved Bond 2020 Proposition B – Parks, which included $3.5 million dollars budgeted for the Park Improvements. A total of $459,744 will fund the new playground units and shade structures and remaining funds to be used towards project costs to include design and equipment installation.

Park Improvements included the 14 playground units with shade structures in the neighborhood, niche and community parks as identified in the current 10-year Parks Master Plan Needs Assessment. The project will replace older playground equipment with new shade structures, a rubber fall zone with a concrete sub-base, and ADA-compliant pathing to the playground units.

“Parks are so important to establishing and maintaining good quality of life in every community,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. “I am proud that the city is moving forward with these voter-approved park projects for the betterment of our parks system and outdoor recreational activities for residents and visitors.”

Parks selected for improvements are Academy, Brookhill, McNorton, Cuiper, Sam Houston, Sherwood, Temple, Douden, Retta, Windsor, Brandywine, Brighton, Captain Falcon, and Crossgate.

The park improvements will begin in March 2022 with anticipated completion in May 2022.
