Corpus Christi Approves Raw Water Purchase

City of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) – Corpus Christi City Council authorized an Untreated Raw Water Purchase Contract with Formosa Plastics Corporation. The contract will provide the City with a supplemental water source during Drought Status: Stage 3.

Formosa has agreed to make available to the City of Corpus Christi for diversion a portion of their unused, untreated raw water that is available under its contract with Lower Nueces River Authority.

This agreement allows the City to purchase up to 10,000 acre-feet of untreated raw water from Lake Texana for $900 per acre-foot ($2.67/1,000 gallons) through December 31, 2025, with an option for a one-year extension. The contract increases the availability of -water that can be furnished to the City from Lake Texana through the Mary Rhodes Pipeline.

Benefits to Corpus Christi Residents:

·      Additional water supply if water outside the standard contract with the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority is unavailable.

·      Additional water supply from Lake Texana to help maintain consistent flows through the Mary Rhodes Pipeline during low flow conditions from the Lower Colorado River.

·      Ability for the Mary Rhodes Pipeline to operate at near maximum capacity (Schedule 4) for most of the year, optimizing the City’s water delivery system.

“Ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply is one of the most important responsibilities we have as a city,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. “By approving this raw water purchase contract, we are securing our future growth, supporting regional economic development, and protecting the quality of life for our residents for generations to come.”

This marks the third time the City has partnered with Formosa on water supply agreements. Smaller agreements were executed in 2011 and 2012, in which the City provided additional water to Formosa. This agreement allows Formosa to provide an additional water supply to the City.
