ARANSAS PASS (News Release) - Aransas Pass Police department recognized Gracie Hallas and Arturo Castillo for the Good Citizen Award at the March 7th City Council Meeting in Aransas Pass.

Six-year-old Gracie Hallas assisted her mother during an emergency on February 5 by dialing 911. Although she did not know the address that she was staying at, Hallas was resourceful enough to message her grandmother from an iPad, who was able to give the address that she was at.

In a letter to Hallas, Aransas Pass Police Chief Eric Blanchard said, “Your actions on February 5th have been directly attributed to saving a life. Your performance during this event mirrors our core values here at the police department of honor, commitment, wisdom, and compassion, and the true meaning of public service.”

Arturo Castillo was also recognized for the Good Citizen award when he saw that a female classmate was choking and performed the Heimlich maneuver. After a few thrusts, the mint which was lodged in her throat was released, allowing her to breathe again.

Coach Justin Guerrero who witnessed the event said, “Art’s quick thinking and CPR skills helped [redacted] tremendously that day.”
