City Preparations Underway for Memorial Day Weekend

City of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – The City of Corpus Christi is preparing for an influx of visitors to area attractions and beaches for the Memorial Day weekend.

Driving on Gulf beaches may be impacted by higher-than-normal tides and onshore winds expected Sunday and Monday. The National Weather Service indicates the water may reach the dunes during the morning hours, and drivers should take precautions.

The Corpus Christi Police Department (CCPD) will set up an Island command post and have patrol units on the beach for underage drinking and DWI enforcement.

A lane for emergency vehicles will be established on the Gulf beach from Zahn Road to Newport Pass.

Thirteen lifeguard stands will be positioned on Gulf beaches and mobile units. The City will use personal watercraft to patrol the area north and south of the Packery Channel. There will be one lifeguard stand and mobile unit at McGee Beach.

Waves of four to six feet are expected on Gulf beaches Sunday and Monday. City staff will monitor the Packery Channel gate for possible closure if needed. Visitors should observe and follow the flag warning system to be aware of surf and rip current conditions. The flags are located on all Gulf beach access roads.

Dogs are allowed on the beach if they are on a leash or under verbal control. Pet owners are reminded to bring clean, fresh water for their pets.

CCPD will monitor traffic flow on Aquarius Street and other key intersections along Park Road 22, including Whitecap Boulevard, Commodores Drive, and State Highway 361. Motorists could see delays and are advised to leave early for their destination.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) will have all available ferries operating in Port Aransas during the holiday weekend. For the latest information and wait times, visit https://twitter.com/PortA_Ferry.

Garbage and recycling will be collected on Memorial Day. The J.C. Elliott Transfer Station and Collection Center and the landfill will be open Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

City parks, swimming pools, and splash pads will be open with free admission.
