City of Corpus Christi Ready for Tropical Activity in the Gulf

City of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) –  The City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC), in coordination with the National Weather Service, is watching an area of thunderstorms in the southern Bay of Campeche. This disturbance should move inland over northeastern Mexico or South Texas this afternoon or evening.

A Hurricane Hunter aircraft has been investigating the disturbance. Radar data indicates that a closed circulation is not present, and the possibility of formation is diminishing, with only a few hours left over water. Regardless of development, there are threats of increased rain chances, dangerous rip currents, increased seas/swells, and possible coastal flooding.

This rainfall could lead to areas of flash and urban flooding.

City services will continue as normal at this time. The Oso Water Reclamation Plant will remain open unless there is lightning in the area. Lifeguard staffing levels on Gulf beaches are limited on weekdays and will increase on Saturday and Sunday.

During inclement weather, we want our community to be safe. If you must get out in these conditions, remember:

·        Drive slower than usual so you have time to react to other traffic on the roadway.

·        Turn on your headlights so you are visible to other vehicles and pedestrians.

·        Be aware of possible flooding in low-lying areas.

·        If you must be on the road, be aware and find an alternative route.

·        While driving, any time you come to a flooded road, Turn Around. Don’t Drown.

During a storm, the safest place for your pets is indoors. If pets must stay outside, provide a covered and weatherproof shelter. Bring shelter, food and water bowls to higher ground.

Pet owners should also ensure their cat or dog is microchipped and has current contact information in case it gets scared of thunder or lightning and runs away.

The City of Corpus Christi has prepared safety tips for residents in advance of inclement weather, including how to sign up for Reverse Alert Notifications.
