CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – City Council approved the first reading of an interlocal agreement with Nueces County for park improvements including a splash pad at West Haven Park, located at 1718 Cliff Maus Drive.

The total project cost is $375,000.00. The county will pay $200,000, and the City will pay up to $175,000 for construction. The City also is responsible for the installation of water and wastewater lines needed for the project, estimated to be $75,000. The second reading is scheduled for the City Council meeting on October 26.

Initiated by Nueces County Commissioner Joe A. Gonzalez, the collaborative effort to improve West Haven Park began in 2015.

“This partnership is a great example of leveraging funds to enhance an area of the community that is typically underserved,” District 3 Council Member Roland Barrera said. “Special thanks to Commissioner Joe A. Gonzalez and Nueces County for their vision of promoting health and wellness with much-needed outdoor activities. I can’t wait to see the neighborhood families enjoying the new splash pad!”

“We always look forward to partnering with the City of Corpus Christi in projects that benefit the community,” Commissioner Joe A. Gonzalez said. “Continuing the vision to promote a healthy lifestyle, installing a splash pad will provide community enrichment and socialization for the entire family. The partnership between the City of Corpus Christi, Nueces County and West Oso ISD has been positive for the residents.”

In 2016, Phase I improvements at the West Haven Park included a walking trail, a half-basketball court, fitness equipment, irrigation and turf for multi-use athletic field, lighting and a new park sign with landscaping. In 2017, Phase 2 included the installation of new playground equipment. Phase 3, the proposed splash pad, came at the request of the community.
