City Council Approves Funding for Improvements to Whataburger Field

City of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – (News Release) During their regularly scheduled meeting today, the Corpus Christi City Council authorized $137,260 in Type A funding to support key improvements to Whataburger Field. This funding will address critical upgrades including protective netting extensions to meet Player Development League (PDL) compliance, pedestrian concourse concrete remediation, and steel support repairs.

Since Major League Baseball (MLB) assumed oversight of Minor League Baseball in 2021, the new facility standards have enhanced safety, operations, and uniformity across the league. These standards ensure high-quality experiences for players, staff, and fans while ensuring minor league longevity within their communities. The funding will also help to ensure that the stadium remains a premier destination for professional baseball and community events.

The Corpus Christi Hooks organization has invested over $2.6 million in upgrades to the City-owned facility since 2020. Additional investment in improvements planned for the 2025 season include replacement of the playing field surface, 1,781 stadium bowl seats, HVAC units, and completing other essential projects to maintain the facility’s high standards.

The Type A Board unanimously approved this project on October 21, 2024. By leveraging this funding, the City of Corpus Christi continues to prioritize economic development, quality of life for the community, and the preservation of city assets like Whataburger Field.
