Chris Ruiz Foundation Grant Brings Free Life Jackets

City of Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) – The City of Corpus Christi and Corpus Christi Water (CCW) are pleased to announce the installation of a new life jacket loaner stand at Sunrise Beach RV Park at Lake Corpus Christi. The life jacket stand is made possible through a grant awarded by the Chris Ruiz Foundation. This initiative represents a significant advancement in water safety measures for families and visitors enjoying recreational activities at Lake Corpus Christi.

The life jacket loaner stand provides free access to properly fitted life jackets for visitors of all ages. Visitors can borrow life jackets at no cost and return them after use, ensuring water safety equipment is available to everyone, regardless of whether they own flotation devices.

“Water safety is a top priority for our community, and we are grateful to the Chris Ruiz Foundation for their commitment to preventing drowning incidents,” said CCW Water Resource Manager Esteban Ramos. “This loaner life jacket stand can help remove barriers to water safety and ensure that families visiting Lake Corpus Christi can safely enjoy their vacation.”

The Chris Ruiz Foundation, established in memory of Christopher Ruiz, focuses on drowning prevention and water safety education throughout the region. The foundation’s recent grant enabled the purchase of 30 new life jackets specifically for the loaner program at Sunrise Beach RV Park.

“We are proud to support the visitors of Sunrise Beach and honor Chris’s memory by making safety accessible to all,” said Michelle Ruiz-Hernandez, representative of the Chris Ruiz Foundation. “This stand is not just about equipment—it’s about saving lives.”

The City encourages all residents and visitors to use this safety resource and to prioritize water safety during all aquatic activities. Proper use of life jackets reduces the risk of drowning and helps ensure water recreation remains enjoyable for families throughout the community.
