Remember the 4 P’s: People, pets, pipes and plants
PEOPLE
Make a plan to stay warm and safe during freezing temperatures
Use space heaters safely — keep them at least three feet away from children, pets and flammable items and never use ovens or stoves for heating
Only use generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas to avoid carbon monoxide exposure
PETS
Bring pets indoors and ensure they have a warm, safe place to stay
PIPES
Insulate exposed pipes and let faucets drip to help prevent freezing
Know how to shut off your water in case a pipe bursts
Important safety reminders
Always assume downed power lines are energized and stay at least 35 feet away and report them immediately
If you smell natural gas (a strong odor similar to rotten eggs), leave the area immediately on foot and call CenterPoint Energy and 911 once you are safely away
PLANTS
Cover or bring in plants to protect them from freezing temperatures
