U.S. Customs and Border Protection
DEL RIO (News Release) – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to Del Rio Sector’s Carrizo Springs Station discovered narcotics and a stolen handgun during an immigration inspection, Jan 7.
Agents assigned to an immigration checkpoint on Farm to Market Road 2644 near Carrizo Springs, encountered two vehicles traveling together shortly after midnight. An immigration inspection of the occupants revealed three U.S. citizens attempting to smuggle four undocumented migrants.
One of the suspected smugglers was in possession of several grams of controlled substances, including suspected cocaine. The individual was also in possession of a stolen handgun and a loaded magazine.
“Immigration checkpoints continue to prove effective in our multi-layered approach to border security,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens. “These arrests highlight the importance of border security and the dangerous situations our agents face as they protect our communities.”
The case was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation and was accepted for prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
