A District 30-3A battle took place in Bishop on Friday afternoon, as the Lady Badgers swept the Santa Gertrudis Academy Lady Lions in straight sets, 3-0.

The win for Bishop (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) kept their district record at a perfect 5-0, as they hold sole position of the top spot in the 30-3A standings. Meanwhile for SGA, they now hold a record of 2-3 in district play.

Each set was tightly contested from the start; however, minor runs by the Lady Badgers managed to keep them ahead to win the first two sets by more than six points.

The narrative shifted in set three as SGA carried a three-point lead into the final stretch of the set, 20-23.

Bishop rallied for five straight points to eventually take the final stanza, and the win on the night. Despite the comeback to close out the matchup, Lady Badger Head Coach Sherri Cain said her team must do better to play consistently through every set.

The Lady Badgers were up 2-0 on London last week, but in set three, Bishop had to dig themselves out of a seven-point hole to take it, 27-25.

Cain said they need to do better at playing cleaner volleyball, so they don’t end up in the same situation.

“Today, during the third game we did the same thing (as last week). We had 15 errors and at one point we had three hitting errors in a row. I told the girls we cannot make errors like that. If we get an error, the next ball has to be a good clean hit or it has to be over the net,” Cain said. “We just got to really work on playing clean volleyball, and for some reason our third games are a little bit flat. So, we got to work on that at practice next week.”

The Lady Badgers were led by Bella Borchardt who chipped in 17 kills with 9 digs and three aces for a near double-double in the contest.

Katie Winters added 14 kills with three blocks, and Sarah Dupont had 12 kills and two service aces for Bishop.

Jaydee Zamora was also all over the floor for Bishop, as she racked up 46 assists and had a block at the net.

Libero Hannah Griffith had 13 digs for the Lady Badgers defensively to round out Bishop’s top performers.

On the Lady Lions side, Daphne Hanzak had a double-double with 18 kills, 20 digs and two blocks, while Nina Perez had 13 assists and two blocks in the matchup.

Carina Palacios added 11 assists in the contest, and Rylee Vasquez has 17 digs to her credit as well.

Libero Sarina Gonzalez also chipped in 23 digs and a service ace for Santa Gertrudis in the loss.

Although the Lady Lions took the loss on the night, Head Coach Thomas De Los Santos said he’s proud of the way his team finished the game.

“We had it at the end (in set 3) and we had a slow start, made some adjustments through the matches, and just came up short at the end,” De Los Santos said. “I mean, they're a very good team and they're leading the district right now. So, I'm proud of our girls. We got some things to work on for the second round.”

Next up, the Badgers will travel to San Diego on Tuesday to take on the Lady Vaqueros, with games starting at 5 p.m.

The Lady Lions have a matchup against Hebbronville on Tuesday at home, with matchups starting at 5 p.m. as well.
