Alice Police Department

ALICE, TEXAS (News Release) - The Alice Police Department is providing an update regarding the ongoing investigation into the incident involving first responders who became ill while responding to a call.

At approximately 8:15 pm on Friday, July 11, 2026, the Corpus Christi Fire Department Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Team identified the presence of xylazine after collecting and analyzing swab samples from the rear patient compartment of the ambulance involved in the incident.

Xylazine is a veterinary sedative intended for use in animals and is not typically expected to be present in an ambulance. Investigators are working to determine whether exposure to the substance may have contributed to the illnesses experienced by the first responders. At this time, no final determination has been made, and the investigation remains active.

Authorities emphasize that the investigation is still in its early stages. Detectives and investigators are working alongside local, state, and federal partners to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure a thorough and comprehensive investigation.

Out of the nine first responders who were evaluated at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital, seven have been treated and released to return home.

At this time, two paramedics remain at the hospital for further observation.

The Alice Police Department is asking for the public's patience as investigators continue to carefully examine the evidence. Officials stress the importance of releasing only information that has been verified and caution against speculation while the investigation is ongoing.
