2nd Annual George Luna Memorial Outdoor Powerlifting Meet
BISHOP, TEXAS - It was a bright and sunny day this past Friday, February 7, 2025, at Bishop High School where the 2nd Annual George Luna Memorial Outdoor Powerlifting Meet saw over 200 lifters from area high schools.
As the host school, Bishop recognized their Senior powerlifting athletes with a goodie bag and gave thanks to their coaches, Cyndi Flores and Leti Sala for their dedication to the Powerlifting program.
In December 2023, George Luna at age 51 passed away from complications due to Cirrhosis of the liver.
In 2000, Luna signed to be a physical Education teacher with Bishop CISD and eventually introduce the powerlifting program. He later became the athletic director.
“Coach George Luna was very dear to all of us, and he started this sport in Bishop. I am very grateful to be here and be a part of this team.” Sophomore Julian Moreno continued, “I am hoping to hit 1245 lbs. total.”
“I never got to meet him, Coach George Luna, but I heard he was a good powerlifting coach and everyone loved him. It was sad to see him pass away, but we live through him by doing what he loved the most and that was powerlifting.” Senior David Martinez.
Bishop’s Team Captain Selest Mendez added, “We are doing it all for him, George Luna, and he is watching us. I am just focusing on hitting my regional total and surpassing it and hopefully hitting my state total.”
