Corpus Christi Police Department
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (News Release) - The Corpus Christi Police Department is expanding its footprint and reach, with new substations under construction and one cadet class working through the new Police Training Academy. The department completed Fiscal Year 2025 with several notable achievements.
Construction began this spring on two substations, one in the Northwest at West Guth Park, and another on the City’s Southside on Yorktown Boulevard near Del Mar College’s Oso Creek Campus. These two new buildings are part of a strategic goal to put law enforcement resources closer to the communities they serve. Another substation is in the design phase, with land already acquired near La Palmera Mall.
At the new Police Training Academy, which opened in October 2024, the 84th Police Academy graduated 34 officers in February. Another 25 cadets began in July. The new building is the first dedicated police training facility in the City and has the latest technology to provide a modern training environment.
“As the facilities that support our police force are expanding, our team remains committed to enhancing public safety and reducing crime,” said Police Chief Mike Markle. “Updated substations and a top-notch training academy are proof that our City values its police force.”
The department continued to increase its staffing level, adding 60 police officers over the last six years, for a total police force of 506. Since 2019, the department has seen a $550 million investment with upgraded equipment. Notably, the drone program has been expanded to include 33 drones to support officers, and a new armored vehicle has been added to the fleet.
Fiscal Year 2025 also included significant equipment upgrades, including:
· Virtual Reality training simulator
· New generator for headquarters
· 50 additional patrol vehicles
· Scheduling software
· Purchase of 11 binocular night vision devices for SWAT
· implementation of a NexGen 9-1-1, an internet protocol-based system
· A remodel of the MetroCom breakroom
The Police Department also participated in Operation Safe Return, providing more than 3,000 children with back-to-school supplies, backpacks and haircuts. The Police Athletic League also received funding to rebuild baseball fields, which will enable the league to expand its outreach to young people.
