Learn about the interesting lives of Corpus Christi's founding figures, heroes, and notable residents during the 16th annual "Voices of South Texas - Old Bayview Cemetery Comes Alive!"
The Friends of Old Bayview Cemetery, the Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department, and the Corpus Christi Public Libraries invite the community to this free, all-ages event on Saturday, November 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Old Bayview Cemetery, located at 1202 Ramirez Street.
There will be self-guided tours, live folk music, and a demonstration of a Civil War cannon. In addition to storytelling and re-enactments, visitors can learn more about the individuals buried in the cemetery by reading the placards placed near their tombstones.
The Old Bayview Cemetery is recognized as one of Texas’s most important historical sites for the following:
• It is the first U.S. military cemetery in Texas, established in 1845 by Colonel E.U. Hitchcock on the eve of the U.S.-Mexican War.
• The cemetery is next to the 1845 campsite of General Zachary Taylor’s Army of Occupation.
• For over 600 individuals, including veterans from the War of 1812 through the Spanish-American War, it is their final resting place.
• Its national significance was officially recognized on October 21, 2020, when the National Park Service added it to the National Register of Historic Places.
