The Kirkus Review describes the book as “a timely state history that sheds light on today’s national political and cultural landscapes” and “a compelling account of a complicated, conflicted and cantankerous state.”
In his own words, Texas historian and author Dr. Benjamin H. Johnson says that his book, Texas: An American History (Yale University Press, 2025), “tries to be a history of all Texans.” You can learn more about Dr. Johnson’s insights regarding his home state during a free lecture presented by Del Mar College’s Cultural Programs Committee and the Social Sciences Department on Thursday, Nov. 6, beginning at 6 p.m. in Room 100 of the Venters Business Building on the Heritage Campus.

He has also published books covering environmental history and the border region with his work providing extensive insight into the many experiences, cultures and communities that comprise modern Texas.
