Examine the race to achieve space flight through the lens of gender as longtime Del Mar College History Professor Dr. Erinn McComb shares highlights from her new book during a free Book Talk at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24, in Wolfe Recital Hall on Heritage Campus. Dr. McComb will give an overview of her newly published work, “Gender and the Race for Space: Masculinity and the American Astronaut (1957-1983),” which was released by Anthem Press this past June. The talk will cover a portion of the history of early spaceflight and asks how American gender culture shaped the public image of the American astronaut and spaceflight technology during some of the tensest years of the Cold War era. The event is presented by the Social Sciences Department and is open to the public.
