Fiesta! Philip Hii

  • Richardson Performance Hall 101 Baldwin Boulevard Corpus Christi, TX, 78404 United States (map)

In the words of Shakespeare, “Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow.” For retired Del Mar College faculty member and classical guitarist Philip Hii, the sentiment rings true as the Music Department bids farewell to the accomplished musician and educator during a celebratory concert by the DMC Wind Ensemble featuring Professor Hii and much more on Thursday, April 18, in Richardson Performance Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m.

During “Fiesta!  Philip Hii,” the DMC Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Abel Ramirez will perform in honor and feature the musician as he plays Concerto for Guitar and Band by Juan A. Perez as well as Intermedio from El Baile de Luis Alonso by Geronimo Gimenez. During decades of performing and teaching as a DMC Music faculty member, Professor Hii has molded guitar pedagogy at Del Mar College and throughout the Coastal Bend. Former students have become exceptional leaders, performers and educators in guitar on their own accord, developing distinctive sounds on the instrument.

During “Fiesta! Philip Hii,” the DMC Wind Ensemble, the Music Department and some very special guests will celebrate the legacy of this distinguished and accomplished musician and teacher who has given hundreds of guitarists the musical tools and vision to appreciate their instrument and discover their own voices. Those honoring Philip Hii also invite everyone to “sign a virtual card” to wish him a “Happy Retirement!”
