Día de los Muertos Celebration at Del Mar College

The holiday originated in Mexico. Now, it’s also observed and celebrated all over the United States. Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is the Mexican holiday usually observed Nov. 1-2 and when families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration.

Del Mar College’s Languages Program, Mexican American Studies Program and the DMC chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education will hold a series of activities in Room 108 of the Coles Classroom Building on the Heritage Cam[us Thursday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to celebrate Día de los Muertos. The general community is invited to participate and learn more about the rich cultural traditions of this meaningful holiday. Activities include an alter creation or “ofrenda” workshop (10 to 10:30 a.m.); traditional food tasting such as pan de muerto and tamales (10:30 to 11 a.m.); a poem reading and open mic session focused on remembrance themes (11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.); and reflection and a candle lighting ceremony to remember loved ones now gone (12:15 to 1 p.m.). So, join Del Mar College to celebrate life, honor those loved ones lost and share the beauty of traditions that Día de los Muertos brings. All activities are free and o[pen to the public.
