Corpus Christi’s Public Art Collection
“The Great Heron” By: Dixie Friend Gay (Houston, TX) Year: 2015
Material: Corten steel and stainless steel
Location: Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center (2446 N. Oso Parkway, 78414)
A larger-than-life heron greets visitors as they enter the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center. The majority of this sculpture is made of Corten steel, a weathering steel material specifically designed to encase the sculpture with a protective coating of rust. The body of the sculpture is made of large panels of weathered steel, which form the structure and shape of the heron. The layers, panels, and the gaps in between emulate feathers, and several kinetic features can be seen as the head and chest feathers bounce and sway in the wind. The shining stainless-steel fish in the heron’s beak offers a nice contrast against the rust color of the bird.
