For young guitarist who can read music and are familiar with basic classical guitar techniques, Del Mar College’s Music Department has scheduled its fifth annual three-day Viking Classical Guitar Summer Camp Tuesday through Thursday, June 3-5.
Camp hours run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Heritage Campus in various rehearsal halls throughout each day. This year, the camp features special guest guitarist Dr. Joseph Palmer, a member of the GRAMMY-nominated Texas Guitar Quartet and the Performance Engagement Artist for the Austin Classical Guitar Society, who will perform a concert, a masterclass, technique workshop and co-conduct the Viking Classical Guitar Camp Orchestra along with DMC faculty member Dr. Jay Kacherski.
Students will rehearse and perform with the orchestra, perform at open-mic events and attend all the workshops offered throughout the camp. Cost for this year’s camp is $65 and includes lunch each day as well as a Viking Classical Guitar Camp tee shirt. Campers are encouraged to bring a refillable water bottle daily.
The camp is free for Music majors starting at Del Mar College. For a full camp schedule and more details, visit www.delmar.edu/offices/music/guitar-camp.html. A final performance featuring campers’ hard work is scheduled Thursday, June 5, from 3 to 4 p.m. in Wolfe Recital Hall located adjacent to Viking Hall on the Kosar at Ayers entryway. The performance is free and open to the public.
