The second annual Nueces County Junior Livestock all-star show took place this past Saturday on January 11th. The show is for 1st through 12th grade students with special needs. Each Nueces County participant was able to show a goat or a lamb.
Corpus Christi resident, Daisy Reyes said “This is our second time doing the all star show. We signed up last year and we really enjoyed it and we're back out here this year. When my brother was younger he did the 4-H show and it was just really great program so when they started to offer it to the kids we went last year we enjoyed it.”
Julia Gilliam, “This year was...this year's been a really fun experience and it hasn't even started so we're looking forward to it. So at first this was a school tour for kids with special needs and I saw how much the kids loved being with the animals and San Patricio actually has a show like this. So I got the idea from them and I just kind of brought it over to Nueces County so that's kind of where the show originated. It's definitely a lot more time consuming than I thought it was. Last year I spent over like 160 hours doing the show and I adapted by just doing the show keep going with it and just knowing that I just need to stick with it.
[Reporter] And have you done the show before?
Allison Rosas, “No. it's my first time.”
Corpus Christi Diana Rosas said, “Well she used to do the livestock show several years ago when her siblings helped her. And when this program started last year we didn't know about it until it's over so we made sure that we signed up this year because she just loves animals and loves the livestock show.
Jennifer Felan, “We did it last year and we enjoyed it he enjoyed it. He's a little tired because he was touching all the animals and he enjoyed…that's what he enjoys. The texture and the textile. I think it's important that they get included because that you know obviously they can't handle an animal on their own so having somebody you know to take the time and help them guide the animal that that's really heartwarming to the families that they're included in everything and they're not excluded you know from normal things.
[Reporter] Organizer Julia Gilliam said that 167 Four H and FFA students volunteered to help with the show and 53 exhibitors participated.
