End Domestic Violence Task Force

KINGSVILLE (News Release) - The End Domestic Violence Task Force will host its second Trusted Location training on Monday, January 31, 2022, from 8:15 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church, Kingsville, 312 W. King.

Trusted Locations are churches, businesses, and other organizations who have staff and employees trained in assisting individuals experiencing domestic violence. The training is open to any person wanting to understand domestic violence and the resources our area offers.

The training involves understanding the early signs of domestic violence. Most people are aware of domestic violence when it escalates to physical harm and death. However, domestic violence often starts subtly with control and coercion. Helping the community understand these early warning signs can provide earlier intervention.

Marlyna Resendez, the mission and communications director at University Baptist Church, now a Trusted Location, states that, “Trusted Location training helped by showing us practical steps and resources that are available to any victim or survivor involved in domestic violence.”

Guest speakers will include members of the Kingsville Police Department who will explain police procedures when a domestic violence call comes in and options that victims have. Attendees will hear the dangers these calls present to law enforcement as our community experienced in November with the death of Officer Sherman Benys.

Representatives from the County Attorney’s office will explain protective orders and the procedures for obtaining such an order. The Purple Door will outline their services and resources for our community.

Trainees will receive a step-by-step safety plan to walk individuals through to access their danger, potential resources, and support. Discussion and role playing will walk trainees through how to talk to an individual, how to support the individual needs, and what being a Trusted Location looks like.

Those organizations who wish to be a Trusted Location will be given a binder with a number of resources. Each trainee will receive a t-shirt.

Lunch will be served. A small fee of $10 will be required at the door. Pre-registration is required.
