TAMUK Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

KINGSVILLE (News Release) - Texas A&M University-Kingsville will host a symposium and a Tejano Heritage Awards Banquet as part of the University’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

The symposium, a free event hosted by the department of Art, Communication and Theatre, will feature a presentation by writer Sergio Tronconso, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Little Theatre. The symposium is open to the public with COVID safety rules in effect.
Tronconso will talk about Nepantla, which is an Aztec word in the Nahuatl language developed after the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 16th century to represent the feeling they had after losing their culture and their lands. His latest book Nepantla familias – An Anthology of Mexican American Literature on Families In Between Worlds, is an anthology which he edited and included several recognized Hispanic writers.
The symposium will be followed by a banquet to honor four Tejano pioneers with Tejano Heritage Awards in ceremonies in the Memorial Student Union Building.
The four recipients include Alicia Arredondo Clarke of Rio Grande City; Oscar Gonzalez of Hebbronville; Antonia Alvarez of Edinburg and Roberto Gonzales of Falfurrias.
