EDINBURG (Press Release) – Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector agents interdict two drug smuggling attempts resulting in the seizure of more than 393 pounds of marijuana.

Saturday morning, Weslaco Border Patrol Station agents working near Donna observed several subjects carrying suspected bundles of marijuana into the United States. As agents approached the area, the smugglers abandoned the bundles and absconded into Mexico. An immediate search of the area resulted in the discovery of six bundles of marijuana weighing 393 pounds worth an estimated $314K.

Later in the evening, a vehicle approached the primary lane of inspection at the Javier Vega Jr. Checkpoint near Sarita, Texas. The vehicle was referred to secondary inspection after a K-9 alerted to the vehicle during the immigration inspection of the driver. During secondary inspection, agents discovered 15 grams of marijuana and two semi-automatic pistols located within the vehicle. The driver and passengers were placed under arrest and escorted inside the checkpoint.

All subjects, marijuana, and the firearms were turned over to the Kennedy County Sheriff’s Office.
