CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – Corpus Christi City Council approved an ordinance creating a new Westside Area Development Plan to replace the previously adopted ordinance from 1989.

The City’s Planning Department and urban planners from Freese and Nichols, Inc., worked with the community to prepare a 20-year plan to guide future development, policy initiatives, programs, and public investments based on a shared vision for the future of the Westside study area.

The planning team created guides for revitalization, culture, health, and safety. They also developed seven policy initiatives to help achieve their goals over the next 20 years.

The seven policy initiatives include:

  • Enhance the overall sense of safety through improved programming and environmental design

  • Improve transportation and drainage infrastructure to create a safe environment and mitigate impacts on the community from flooding

  • Preserve, promote, and celebrate the local history and culture of the Westside

  • Improve or expand facilities and programming to support a healthy lifestyle

  • Support a variety of housing options and affordability levels to encourage homeownership and sustain the existing housing stock

  • Foster an environment for economic development that attracts new businesses, increases employment, and revitalizes or enhances existing commercial and industrial areas

  • Expand public and private community services and programs

“The City’s adoption of the Westside Development Plan today is a strategic guide to important infrastructure improvements for the Westside,” Mayor Paulette Guajardo said. “I am honored to have been a part of planning the future of this historical area.”
