CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) - Beginning next week, Animal Care Services (ACS) will offer free microchipping for cats and dogs. The service will be provided at the ACS facility (located at 2626 Holly Road) every Thursday from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

The microchip transmits an ID number when scanned by a veterinarian, animal shelter, or ACS officer. Microchips can identify the pet’s name, its owner’s contact information, and medical history. This information is essential to ensure the animal receives appropriate care while in the custody of ACS and that the pet’s return to its owner is expedited.

“I am thrilled to see Animal Care Services using best practices to ensure the health and safety of our pets. I will continue to focus on improving our neighborhoods through services such as this,” Mayor Paulette M. Guajardo said.

The microchip device is approximately the size of a grain of rice. In addition, the insertion procedure is quick and painless. Unlike tags, microchips are not easily removed. Therefore, it is difficult for someone to falsely claim lost or stolen pets who have received this service. Please note that the information on the chip can always be updated if the pet changes addresses or legal ownership.

Please note that no appointment is necessary and that the service is afforded to cats and dogs only.
