Large Fight Leads to Multiple Arrest

Bishop Police Department

BISHOP, TEXAS - (News Release) At approximately 11:30PM on Saturday, August 31, 2024, Bishop Police Department Shift II Patrol Officers along with Nueces County Constable Pct-3 Deputies, were dispatched to a Fight In Progress Involving a Weapon, at the American Legion Hall, located in the 400 Block of Texas Avenue, Bishop, Texas.

The Reporting Party advised two males were fighting at the location and one subject had a gun.

Upon arrival on scene Officers observed a large crowd gathered inside the establishment, and it appeared several subjects were attempting to restrain an aggressive male.

Officers attempted to take the male subject involved into custody, at which time he began physically resisting. A struggled ensued and the subject struck and spit on an Officer while physically resisting and fighting officers attempting to take him into custody. During the subsequent struggle an Officer deployed his taser, and eventually the subject was taken into custody.

As Officers on scene were taking the male suspect into custody other individuals in the crowd began physically surrounding them, interfering with their attempts to detain individuals and refused to comply with directives.

Additional back-up units were requested and Law Enforcement Officers from Nueces County Sheriff's Office, Nueces County Precinct Five Constable, Robstown Police Department, Texas DPS, and Kleberg County Sheriff's Office, responded to the scene to assist.

Additional Law Enforcement Officers arrived on scene a short time later and the crowd was eventually dispersed.

The adult male suspect, later identified as 20 year old Elijah Sanchez, was arrested and charged with felony Assault on a Public Servant and Resisting Arrest.

A second adult female, later identified as 47 year old Cynthia Hernandez, was also arrested on scene for Interfering with Public Duties and Resisting Arrest.

Nueces County E.S.D 3 Fire / Rescue and NCESD-6 EMS were dispatched to the location and assisted with providing medical evaluation and treatment for officers and subjects on scene.

Sanchez was transported to an area hospital for further medical evaluation and clearance prior to being transported to jail.

Both subjects were eventually transported to the Nueces County Jail.

This is an active and ongoing criminal investigation and additional arrests and criminal charges are likely in this case.

All suspects are presumed innocent, until proven guilty in a court of law.
