The Friday night lights were lit up for the first time in Kingsville since the 2020 football season came to a close, and two area teams showcased what they were made of.

The H.M. King Brahmas and the Santa Gertrudis Academy Lions took the field for Midnight Madness at two separate locations as both squads opened up practice for the public.

The Bulls took the field at MOPAC as the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity squads all got some reps in as a unit, with the Brahma faithful cheering them on in the stands.

Head Coach Michael Davila, during the practice and scrimmage, talked about the importance of remaining disciplined, focused, and being “ready for anything” when being on the field. And, from beginning to end, he continued to speak to the 2022 seniors about their “last ride together” as players in varsity football.

The Brahmas face Sinton in a scrimmage at home inside Javelina Stadium at 7 p.m. for their first taste of action of the season.

As HMK was at MOPAC, the SGA Lions were at Javelina Stadium at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The Lions were on the field from 12:01 until nearly 2 a.m., getting in plenty of drills and live football action as spectators watched the action.

Head Coach Jerry Carpentier constantly preached to his team about playing smart, fast, and as a team while the Lions flew all over the field.

The practice was split up into two sides, as starting offense ran the gauntlet in the beginning, and SGA’s improving defense was swarming the scout team in the second half of practice.

The Lions’ season begins on Aug. 13 in a scrimmage away from home in Ben Bolt, with a time to be determined.
