CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – The City Council approved the purchase of 22 school zone flashing beacons, and 43 flashings LED signs. The funding for the $152,357 purchase is included in the FY 2022 Adopted Budget.

The Public Works Department will install 22 school zone flashing beacons in school zones on streets with high traffic volume. The list of installation sites also includes locations where school zone beacons are attached to utility poles and need to be upgraded to stand-alone signage.

“Our students, parents and all residents deserve to travel to and from school knowing that proper safety precautions are in place to protect them, and this project helps to make school zones safer for all,” said Mayor Paulette Guajardo.

The Department also will install 43 flashing LED signs (including 35 flashing LED stop signs), four Flashing LED warning signs, two flashing speed limit signs, and two school zone flashing LED signs. Flashing LED signs are designed to capture a driver’s attention and increase roadway compliance.

“The goal is to help make Corpus Christi as safe as possible for drivers and pedestrians. Proper and visible signage is one more step towards that goal,” Councilman Ben Molina said. “There is nothing more important to me and this leadership team than safety – the safety of our loved ones and the communities we serve.”

This purchase is one of several safety enhancements projects for the City’s Vision Zero Program. The City’s Vision Zero Program is a commitment to making our community a safer place to live and play.
