Chemistry Department Adds 3 More Years with Grant Renewal

KINGSVILLE - The chemistry department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville has received funding that helps students with their studies and helps support research in the department. The department has received the Departmental Research grant from The Robert A. Welch Foundation since 1998. And, they just received notice that they will get $150,000 for another three years.
Dr. Christine Hahn, chair of chemistry, said the grant helps support students in research participation with scholarships every semester.
“Faculty members also receive support for their ongoing research projects as mentors of the awardees. The Welch grant is instrumental to sustaining our research activities as the chemistry department and allows us to supply faculty members with chemicals and laboratory supplies,” Hahn said.
“Since faculty have a relatively high teaching load, it is not easy for them to submit external grant proposals which become funded. Therefore, we are very grateful for the support by the Welch Foundation which we have received for 22 years. The experiences, which the students gain in our research laboratories, is the best part of their professional training they can get in their chemistry curriculum,” Hahn added.
“This opens the door to the world. Many of our chemistry students have been admitted to graduate studies or become employed in the chemical industry based on their research training with our faculty,” she said.
