CORPUS CHRISTI (News Release) – The City Council approved an amendment to the lease agreement between the City and Corpus Christi Baseball Club, L.P., for funding of $374,200 for capital improvements to Whataburger Field.

The improvements will help bring the stadium into compliance with Major League Baseball (MLB) Standards. Whataburger Field is home to the Corpus Christi Hooks, a minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros. Their 2022 season began on March 8.

The Corpus Christi Business and Job Development Corporation (also known as the Type A Board), which uses sales tax funding to support business development, had previously approved $701,800 for Whataburger Field. Today’s action increases their total contribution to $1,076,000.

MLB now has enhanced stadium standards to create a more consistent work environment across all the minor league teams. This additional funding brings Whataburger Field closer to compliance with the newly adopted standards.

The scope of work includes completed upgrades to the field lighting, construction of a new Women’s Personnel Clubhouse (in progress), and renovation of the Visitor’s Clubhouse, to begin in October 2022. The construction project is scheduled for completion in December 2022.
