U.S. Customs and Border Protection

BROWNSVILLE (News Release)- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations (OFO) Brownsville Port of Entry organized a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Thursday, October 21, 2021, with a walk from the Gateway International Bridge to the Veterans International Bridge.  Other area law enforcement agencies and first responders also joined in the endeavor to raise awareness.

“Today, many different agencies and departments unite and march together to not only to raise awareness, but to also honor those who are fighting this battle and those who we have lost,” said Port Director Tater Ortiz, Brownsville Port of Entry.

The event began with opening remarks by Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chairperson Rosa Mares addressing the participants, which included CBP Field Operations officers, Border Patrol agents, and other notable attendees such as Brownsville Police Department officers, Rango Viejo Police Department, Cameron County Constables, Cameron County Sheriff, UTRGV Police Department and other stakeholders such as the Mexican Consul representatives and Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz.  Also participating in the event were two area hospitals distributing information and answering questions posed by the attendees.

“This event reminds us to appreciate the many blessings in our lives.  It also reminds us that we can make a difference in the lives of those going through difficult times by being their support.” said Supervisory CBP Officer Rosa Mares, Brownsville Port of Entry

Participants began the walk at the Gateway International Bridge and walked the stretch of more than two miles to Veterans International Bridge while CBP Office of Field Operations marked units as well as Brownsville Police Department marked units provided safe escort along the streets.

The attendees held a brief rally at the end of the walk with several tables displaying providing information and healthy snacks for the attendees.  Plans are already underway for next year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.
