A wild week of softball for Bishop and Santa Gertrudis Academy concluded on Friday night with both teams earning victories to advance to the Class 3A Regional Semi-Finals.

Bishop

The Lady Badgers took on Mathis on back-to-back nights at the Cabaniss Sports Complex in Corpus Christi, as Bishop took a 2-0 series win over the Lady Pirates.

Bishop took the first matchup 7-1 and won the second game 12-0.

The series was highlighted by the pitching prowess of Bishop’s Andrea Martinez, who ended the series with a five-inning perfect game on Friday night.

Martinez sat 13 of the 15 batters she faced in game two, including sitting down the first ten batters put in front of her. She collectively had 22 strikeouts in the series.

On top of her pitching performance, Martinez had three RBI’s on two of her four plate appearances on Friday as well.

“I knew from (game one) that coming out today I had to throw even harder, work more of my spins and just adjust,” Martinez said of her performance on Friday. “I'm super proud of my team. You know some of us played together when we were little and we still play together now. I'm confident, really very confident in my team and we came out and we did what we needed to.”

In game two, Alinna Cruz had a two-run homer in the third to highlight some of the hitting done by the Lady Badgers on Friday.

She finished two hits, three RBI’s, and crossed the plate three times.

Hannah Griffith, Sadie Flores, Kiera Cruz, and Maddy Pena also had RBI’s for the Lady Badgers, while Mia Tamez also had multiple hits in the win.

“I'm very happy for the girls; they came out here, they've been putting in a lot of hard work all season long, and just to see it come to fruition is just an awesome thing,” Head Coach Tito Moreno said. “With the girls hitting the ball, the way Andrea pitched, the way we played defense in this series, and putting it all together was a great thing. We’re happy, but we’re not satisfied because we’re not done yet.”

Up next, the Lady Badgers will take on Hallettsville, with details on the matchup still to be determined.

Santa Gertrudis Academy

The Lady Lions also advanced to the regional semi-finals after closing out their series against District 30-3A opponents London, 13-3 on Friday night in Robstown.

The Lady Lions took the series 2-0, with a 6-0 shutout in game one behind a stellar Jaci Salinas pitching performance.

Salinas struck out nine batters in the game one victory, as Carissa De Los Santos sat down 6 in the game two outing.

De Los Santos had six total RBI’s in the series on four hits, with Adriana Mireles notching the same stat line.

Mireles, however, was the key factor of offense on Friday night, collecting five of her six RBI’s during game two. Alana Benitez, Trinity Silguero and Jackie Garza also had RBI’s added to their resume in the series.

Up next for the Lady Lions is a series against the Columbus Cardinals, which will take place in Beeville next week. Additional details remain to be determined.
