U.S. Customs and Border Protection

EDINBURG (News Release) - On Sunday, August 22, agents working at the Javier Vega Jr. Checkpoint in Sarita discovered 54 migrants being smuggled in a commercial trailer. During processing, record checks revealed a Honduran national to be a confirmed 18 Street gang member. The subject was also previously removed from the United States.

Later that morning, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers encountered two subjects near the Brooks County Rest Area north of the Falfurrias Border Patrol Checkpoint. Border Patrol agents determined they were illegally present in the United States and transported them to the station for processing. At the station, criminal records checks identified a Salvadoran national as a confirmed MS-13 gang member with a conviction for sexual battery in Hall County, Georgia. The 44-year-old migrant was sentenced to 30 days confinement and 12 months’ probation in 2009.

Border Patrol processed the subjects accordingly.
